  Latvia: Protest by National Symphony Orchestra over appointment of artistic director

  The musicians of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra took protest action in June 2006 over what they perceived as an affront to the integrity of their creative work and working conditions. The musicians were protesting against the decision of the Ministry of Culture, which oversees the orchestra’s activities, to replace the orchestra management and restrict the self-management right of the orchestra. Negotiations to resolve the conflict between representatives of the musicians and the Ministry of Culture have got underway.

  EU Level: Building social dialogue in the live performance sector 

  The EU-level social partners in the live performance sector are holding a series of joint seminars with colleagues from the new EU Member States, aimed at fostering the social dialogue process in these countries. The first two seminars were held in Estonia in October 2005 and Hungary in January 2006, and a third will be held in Poland in March 2006.
