Institut de l’Audiovisuel et des Télécommunications en Europe (IDATE)

Objectives

The European institute for audiovisual and telecommunications (Institut de l’Audiovisuel et des Télécommunications en Europe, IDATE) was established in 1977 as a centre for exchange and analysis, specialising in the telecommunications, Internet and media sectors. The institute’s mission is to encourage debate and exchange of experiences at European level between players active in these sectors.

Activities and outputs

The institute’s main areas of activities are consultancy services; an observatory for the communications sectors; and a forum for discussion and debate.

Its consultants and analysts conduct numerous studies and consultancy missions examining the impact of market, regulatory and technological evolutions on companies and business strategies in the information technologies and communications sectors. Their field of enquiry ranges from market and convergence strategy, international benchmarking, regulation and policy advice to business planning and training. In this sense, the institute functions as a watchdog for monitoring the evolution of information and communication technologies (ICT) worldwide.

Furthermore, IDATE’s exchange platform, the ‘IDATE Foundation,’ fosters open and independent debate and discussion among the sector's most prominent players: company heads, public policymakers and the academic world. The foundation was set up with the impetus of driving an open and independent reflection on the sector’s development, associating the largest businesses in the field. Its members include more than 25 international groups, including telecommunications operators, television channels, manufacturers, software services, banks and financial organisations, large corporations, etc. The foundation organises seminars on behalf of its members and supports ancillary activities of IDATE, such as the ‘international conference’ and the publication of the DigiWorld report.

The international conference is an annual event providing a forum for industry leaders, public policymakers and market experts to debate issues at stake and future challenges in the field of information and communication technologies.

DigiWorld, the annual report published by IDATE, is presented in the form of an atlas mapping out the strategies at play in the digital world. The report offers a database and analytical framework for tracing developments in information and communication technologies.
