PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

The law lists the 11 "fêtes légales" (official holidays) which are public holidays in France, only one of which, May 1, must compulsorily be "chômé", i.e. a day off work, with pay. The listing of the other 10 holidays would be of little relevance were it not for the fact that collective agreements and custom have in many cases ensured that such public holidays entitle employees to dispensation from work at the normal rate of pay.
