All aliens living in the Federal Republic must have permission to reside (Aliens Act ยง 3). It is granted in the form of a residence permit and the right of abode , and in the form of leave to stay for a limited period and for a specific purpose and authorization to stay for reasons under international law or urgent humanitarian reasons and also by reason of the political interests of the Federal Republic.
The grant of permission to reside is normally subject to the conditions that there should be no grounds for deportation or other reason for refusal and that the alien concerned should be able lawfully to provide their own means of living. Permission to reside may be subject to a time limit and geographical restrictions.
