Under Greek law (Article 678, Civil Code; Article 2, Law 2112/1920), employers are obliged to furnish any employee whose employment relationship comes to an end with a certificate of employment, for the purposes of his or her subsequent career. It contains particulars of the duration of employment and the nature of the job performed (objective facts) and/or the quality of performance (subjective information), according to the employee's request. Although the law stipulates merely that such a certificate must be provided at the end of the employment relationship, it is accepted in principle that the employer is similarly obliged to provide one at any time during the contract as part of the more general duty of care .
If the employer refuses to provide the certificate or if the certificate provided does not comply with the employee's request, the employee has the right to apply to the courts to obtain its issue or amendment.
