Life in the work environment depends on numerous factors: physical working conditions such as lighting, temperature, vibration and dust; the content of work in terms of autonomy and creativity; the functioning of the enterprise itself as regards stability of the employment relationship and payment systems; and the functioning of employee representation bodies and the style of management (autocratic, or open and co-operative with employee representatives and the unions). In recent years, as part of participation by employee representatives and employees themselves encompassing the work environment, initiatives for the improvement of working life have emanated both from the unions and employee groups (e.g. groups concerned with wider environmental issues) and in the context of quality circles (see also health and safety ).
