PARTICIPATION RATE/ACTIVITY RATE

Technically defined as the economically active population (those in work plus those actively seeking work) as a proportion of the total population of working age. In Spain, the Survey of the Working Population (EPA) calculates the participation rate by dividing the economically active population by the population over the age of 16. The rate has increased in recent years; it is higher for men than for women, though there has been a greater increase for women than for men; and it is concentrated in the 20-54 age group, followed by the 16-19 age group and then the over-55 age group. A supplementary concept is the employment rate, which is the number of people actually working or employed as a proportion of the economically active population. The employment rate in Spain has fallen in recent years, and is highest for men and the 25-54 age group. The unemployment rate is the number of people who are unemployed as a proportion of the economically active population. See unemployment , stopping work/unemployment .
