02 December 2009: Decline in employee absence and impact of the recession (United Kingdom / Information update)
The Chartered Institute for Personnel Development published a survey on absenteeism in the United Kingdom in the summer of 2009. The report found that absence among employees had declined in 2009, while the costs associated with employee absence had slightly risen. The aim is to obtain a fuller insight into differences in working time across the European Union and into developments in average hours worked both in total and by specific sections of the work force in different Member States over recent years. The concern is to investigate the factors underlying the changes that are observed in the survey data collected and, in particular, how terms and conditions of employment are changing in relation to working time. 13 November 2009: UK: Quality of work and employment of low-qualified workers (United Kingdom / National Contribution)
Despite deficits in the UK skills base, considerable progress has been made in increasing skill levels in the UK over the last decade. However, in December 2006 the government published a report which concluded that the UK must become a ‘world leader in skills’ by 2020 if it was to secure future economic and social prosperity. This has been followed by a raft of policy initiatives aimed at improving the skill levels of all employees, not just the low qualified. The impact of these initiatives has yet to be evaluated.

A report released by the UK Chartered Institute for Personnel Development in April 2009 has revealed the impact of the economic recession on workplace training. The report finds that, in the majority of organisations, cuts have been imposed on training budgets; however, the level of cuts differs between economic sectors. The survey also found that the recession had not adversely affected companies’ and organisations’ views on the importance of training.

The UK Trades Union Congress (TUC) has issued guidelines for employers and union representatives on steps to minimise the risk of skin cancer for outdoor workers. The document notes the risks associated with outdoor working in the summertime and outlines a series of practical steps that can be taken to lessen the cancer risk. The guidance also raises interesting questions on the best way of regulating the risks of skin cancer to outside workers in the UK.

16 June 2009: Impact of climate change on UK workplaces (United Kingdom / Information update)
A report issued by the Trades Union Congress in April 2009 has highlighted the implications of climate change for employment. The report describes the findings of research conducted in the UK’s private and public sectors and concludes that organisations need to do far more to consider the implications of climate change on workplaces. The report also offers a series of policy recommendations to the UK’s public authorities and social partners.

26 March 2009: UK: The occupational promotion of migrant workers (United Kingdom / National Contribution)
The UK contribution to this study on migrant workers begins by outlining the relevant and available data on migrant workers in the UK. It then notes the various public policies on the occupational promotion of migrant workers in the UK, before recording a series of region and sector specific ‘best practice’ guides to the occupational promotion of migrant workers in the UK. It concludes with a summary of the state of the occupational promotion of migrant workers in the UK.
