25 November 2011: United Kingdom: Recent Developments in Work Organisation in the EU 27 Member States and Norway (United Kingdom / National Contribution)
National data on work organisation in the UK is limited. Much attention has focused on ‘high-performance working’ (HPW) which is seen as having the potential to improve productivity, organisational performance and employee outcomes. However, take-up remains limited, and there is debate concerning its definition and impact, particularly on employees. In terms of the main trends in work, the evidence points to people being increasingly offered jobs with high work intensity, limited autonomy, and pressure from customers to deliver, in an increasingly polarised labour market.

09 September 2011: Living standards at risk in low-to-middle income households (United Kingdom / Information update)
A recent report by the Resolution Foundation suggests that low-to-middle income households are ‘pinched’ by a combination of modern work pressures and reliance on public services. This ‘too rich and too poor’ group is particularly vulnerable to a decline in living standards due to caring responsibilities or cuts in public services. Their predicament is indicative of economic growth without the relative gain of wage increases, the report argues.

28 July 2011: UK: EWCO CAR on Working conditions of nationals with a foreign background (United Kingdom / National Contribution)
In the UK much attention has been paid to the working conditions of ethnic minorities, but, given the “weak” conception of citizenship that characterises the country, this rarely distinguishes between nationals and not nationals. The British situation is characterised by deep differences between white nationals from the former colonies or from the USA/rest of Europe (who tend to have better working conditions that White British nationals), from the Indian subcontinent, and Black British. In this report, in most cases, ‘ethnic minority’ is considered as proxy for nationals with a foreign background, but data are potentially available for more specific investigation.

06 July 2011: TUC survey shows rise in psychosocial hazards at work (United Kingdom / Information update)
The results of the Trades Union Congress’s eighth biennial survey of health and safety representatives in the UK indicate an increased prominence for psychosocial hazards in the workplace with stress, bullying/harassment and overwork among the top five hazards faced by workers. The results also show heightened levels of psychosocial hazards in the public sector and within larger organisations. The survey covers 27 psychosocial and physical hazards in the workplace.

15 March 2011: Survey highlights rise in company well-being initiatives (United Kingdom / Information update)
In October 2010 the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development published its eleventh annual absence management report based on the findings of an online survey, which included the provision of well-being initiatives by UK employers. Nearly half the organisations that responded provided well-being initiatives for their employees. The rate of absenteeism at work has declined, but there is growing concern over the impact of ‘presenteeism’ in the workplace.

01 March 2011: UK: EWCO CAR on “Getting prepared for the upswing: Training and Qualification during the Crisis” (United Kingdom / National Contribution)
There is evidence to suggest that organizations in the UK have cut training budgets in reaction to the economic crisis. However, there have been several policies by the UK public authorities and organizations that seek to improve training and skill development amongst UK workers during the economic recession. The UK social partners have consistently supported such policies.
