Attractive workplace for all - Fostering employability

The EU has committed itself to targets of full employment (European Employment Strategy) and increased competitiveness (Lisbon strategy). Given the pressures of technological change and increasing competition, maintaining and enhancing skill levels are essential, both at individual and organisational level, if firms and individuals are to prosper.

Under Orientation 1: Fostering employability, innovative company approaches to developing inhouse skills and competences were identified. Key findings of the research are the following:

  • Human resources are valued as a key strategic factor for competitiveness and development of the company, therefore personnel and competence development are often embedded in the company strategy management.
  • A feature in most case studies is the identification of individual, team, and organisational needs for qualifications and skills.
  • Several companies encourage internal mobility policies as a valuable means to develop broader knowledge among employees and to restructure the organisation without redundancies.
