Innovative recruitment strategies in the fisheries sector - Spain
| Author: | Sanmamed, Alicia |
| Summary: | The Spanish fishing fleet is the biggest in the EU, serving the very strong domestic market for seafood. However, the fishing industry does not contribute greatly to Spain’s GDP – around 0.5%. This, however, is more a reflection of the recent rapid growth of the Spanish economy as a whole than of the significance of the fishing industry per se. Some coastal areas are highly dependent on fishing by EU standards – notably Galicia, on the Atlantic coast of Spain, which has a fisheries dependence of 4.1%, one of the highest in the EU. |
