BusinessInfo.cz – official Czech portal for business and exports

Coverage/Eligibility

Launched in 2001, BusinessInfo.cz is the official Czech portal for businesses and exports, sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic (Ministerstvo průmyslu a obchodu České republiky, MPO ČR). It is operated by Czech Trade Promoting Agency (Česká agentura na podporu obchodu, CzechTrade), the state agency responsible for promoting exports.

The portal is available to all enterprises, including start-ups, foreign companies, exporters and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

BusinessInfo.cz also serves as the electronic version of Points of Single Contact (PSC). The PSCs were established by the Services Directive as information points for businesses in the internal market of the European Union.

Main characteristics

BusinessInfo is the official portal for business support in Czechia and it is entirely financed through national funds (formely financed through European funds). The portal is run by the state agency CzechTrade and sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Czechia (Ministerstvo průmyslu a obchod České republiky, MPO ČR). It is based on a multilateral cooperation. Portal partners include other ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerstvo zahraničních věcí České republiky, MZV), Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (Ministerstvo práce a sociálních věcí České republiky, MPSV), Ministry of Interior (Ministerstvo vnitra České republiky, MV ČR) and Ministry of Finance (Ministerstvo financí České republiky, MF ČR) and related agencies, non-governmental institutions, chambers of commerce and employer confederations. Other partners are the Czech statistical office (Český statistický úřad, ČSÚ), the Czech export bank (Česká exportní banka, CEB), the Export Guarantee and Insurance Corporation (Exportní garanční a pojišťovací společnost, EGAP) and the Czech Business Representation to the EU (CEBRE).

The portal is intended to serve as a one-stop-shop combining information from state administration bodies, agencies and non-governmental associations and chambers of commerce. It covers a wide variety of information ranging from ‘easy-to-read’ to more elaborated material. It provides comprehensive information services for local companies but one of the main objectives is to help foreign businesses to navigate the Czech business environment.

The largest group of users are SMEs and exporters, thus the most viewed content concerns foreign trade, finance and taxes, and legislation.

The foreign trade web pages are primarily focused on export opportunities and provide a snapshot of relevant public services. Particularly important for exporters is the online database of export opportunities sorted by country and sector. The added value is that information is obtained directly from CzechTrade and Ministry of Foreign Affairs offices abroad. The portal also offers comprehensive and regularly updated information from individual countries collected thorugh the foreign network of embassies and CzechTrade Representative Offices.

BusinessInfo.cz has several other online tools to simplify business processes (including an helpdesk, online enquires, administrative forms and showcase of best practices).

During the COVID-19 crisis, the website has also provided information for entrepreneurs on available financial support.

Effectiveness

The majority of visitors to BusinessInfo.cz consists of visitors who regularly visit the portal. The average monthly number of visitors has increased every year since 2002.

  • 6,642 in 2002
  • 20,124 in 2003
  • 34,325 in 2004
  • 60,120, in 2005
  • 146,472 in 2006
  • 158,632 in 2007
  • 196,951 in 2008
  • 248,493 in 2009
  • 274,645 in 2010
  • 302,191 in 2011
  • 307,499 in 2012.

After a large technological overhaul in 2012, the number of visits decreased. Better and easier availability of the required information has reduced the demand for repeated visits. Users can find the required information quicker and easier. The average monthly number of visitors was:

  • 228,365 in 2013
  • 225,631 in 2014
  • 219,061 in 2015
  • 205,671 in 2016
  • 219,031 in 2017
  • 226,928 in 2018
  • 318,944 in Q1/2019.

The portal is regarded as a good channel of communication between the state administration and businesses. Users' comments are positive; in the first quarter of 2019 there were over 21,564 registered users.

The Businessinfo.cz portal has a number of key performance indicators (KPIs), including the number of visitors, the aim being to be the number one choice for businesses and exporters in Czechia in search for business opportunities and export advice.

Strengths

The key strength of the portal is the easy access to information on business and exports. The information is up-to-date and is presented in a structured way. The other strength is that it provides a single entry point for business therefore avoiding the fragmentation in the provision of information by the state administration and government institutions.

The portal has a large potential target group in consideration of the wide range of information on offer. CzechTrade is expanding this offer and seeking to attract businesses that are not currently using this portal.

BusinessInfo.cz is one of the most visited state administration portals in Czechia and one of the main communication channels for entrepreneurs and exporters.

Weaknesses

State agencies and institutions are often reluctant to share information and data. The unwillingness to share information stems from the unclear division of competences with regard to business support in Czechia and abroad. Another weakness is that the further development of the portal relies to a high degree on government strategies. Drawn from the national budget, funding is only provided on an annual basis and subject to parliamentary approval.

Examples

The foreign trade web pages are primarily focused on export opportunities and provide a snapshot of relevant public services. Particularly important for exporters is the online database of export opportunities sorted by country and sector. The added value is that information is obtained directly from CzechTrade and Ministry of Foreign Affairs offices abroad.
