Automation and digitisation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), are undergoing a rapid evolution. This impacts working conditions in a variety of ways and raises a host of new ethical concerns. In recent times, the policy debate surrounding these concerns has become more prominent and has increasingly focused on AI. Key EU policy developments, especially in relation to AI, have shaped the policy debate in many EU Member States, and in some instances they have led to the adoption of new policy initiatives that address these concerns in the context of work and employment. This topical update will map relevant European and national policy and regulatory initiatives, and explore the role of the social partners in their design and implementation. It will also review a growing body of research on the topic showing that ethical implications go well beyond legal and compliance issues, extending to quality of work. A good understanding of ethical implications – grounded in evidence-based research – is highly relevant for policymakers. European and national policies should ensure that new digital technologies are implemented in the workplace in an ethical way, respectful of human dignity and fundamental rights, and without compromising job quality.
