New agreement for Swedish chemical workers
A new settlement for 25,000 blue-collar workers in the Swedish chemicals and allied industries was reached in April 1997, well before the current one is due to expire. It provides for pay to be negotiated at company level. If the parties cannot arrive at a settlement however, an increase in wage rates of 2.67% on average will apply.
On 15 April 1997, the Almega Industrial and Chemical Association and the Industrial Union concluded a new collective agreement on wages and general terms and conditions of employment for blue-collar workers in the pharmaceutical, rubber, plastic and paint industries. It runs from 1 June 1997 to 30 April 1998.
Employers and unions issued a joint statement at the end of the negotiations: "We are pleased that the agreement could be reached in good time and without the need for industrial action. It is consistent with the spirit of the new agreement on cooperation in industry" (SE9703110N).
According to the agreement, pay will be negotiated at company level. If the local parties are unable to reach an agreement they can call for central negotiations. It these are not successful, the wage rates will be increased by 2.67% on average.
The parties have also agreed to set up a committee to investigate the demand of the trade unions for new working time arrangements. The committee is due to report to the parties on 15 October 1997 at the latest.
