Position paper: Work in the platform economy (Position Paper: 'Werk in de platformeconomie')

In its position paper for the roundtable discussion on 16 November 2017, the food delivery company Takeaway.com (Thuisbezorgd) expressed concern over the threat of a race to the bottom in employment conditions which underpins the ‘gig model’. Takeaway’s riders are salaried employees who are insured for illness and accidents and pay tax and social contributions. In addition, there is talk of possible intermediate forms of employment, because the current legislation would not be sufficient. We believe that if a business model cannot be successful under existing legislation, it is not the legislation that needs to be reconsidered, but the business model.
