Eurofound’s European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) paints a wide-ranging picture of Europe at work across countries, occupations, sectors and age groups. This series consists of findings from the EWCS 2010, the fifth edition of the survey. The survey was first carried out in 1990.
- Understanding how working time is organised and how this is impacting on balance of work versus private life is of fundamental importance. This general statement is very much in accordance with the main objective of the Europe 2020 employment strategy, stating that at least 75% of the population aged 20–64 should be employed by 2020, necessitating in many Member States a significant increase in women’s labour market participation.

Achieving work environments that make work sustainable over a lifetime is a key facet of the promotion of longer working lives. This study - based on the fifth European Working Conditions Survey - considers the dimensions of work that have proved essential to the understanding of work sustainability: working conditions; physical and psychological health; the expressive dimension of work; reconciliation of working and non-working time; and socioeconomic conditions.
- Report19 November 2012On 12 April 2012, a conference on 'Quality of work and Employment: A policy tool towards inclusive and sustainable growth' was jointly organised by the European Parliament and Eurofound, with the participation of Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament and with the support of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.

Work plays a pivotal role in people’s lives, in the functioning of companies and in society at large. Improving the quality of work and working conditions has long been at the forefront of EU policy, most recently in the Europe 2020 Strategy towards ‘Smart, inclusive and cohesive growth’. The fifth European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) explores topics as diverse as physical risks, working time, gender segregation, work–life balance, employee representation, work organisation, stress at work, skills development and pay, as well as health and well-being.

Die Untersuchung der Frage, wie sich die Arbeitsbedingungen verändert haben (oder gleich geblieben sind), kann Aufschluss darüber geben, welche Fortschritte im Hinblick auf diese politischen Ziele erzielt wurden. Zudem kann diese Untersuchung aufzeigen, welche Auswirkungen die treibenden Kräfte des Wandels wie Globalisierung, technologische Entwicklung, flexiblere Formen der Arbeitsorganisation, Alterung der europäischen Bevölkerung und die steigende Zahl der Doppelverdienerhaushalte auf die Arbeit und Beschäftigung der Menschen hatten. Diese ersten Erkenntnisse aus der fünften von Eurofound durchgeführten Europäischen Erhebung über die Arbeitsbedingungen bieten einen zusammenfassenden Überblick über einige zentrale Veränderungen der Arbeitsbedingungen, die sich im Zeitverlauf vollzogen haben.

This issue of Foundation Focus looks at the relationship between work and health, using first findings from Eurofound’s fifth European Working Conditions Survey which was launched on 16 and 17 November 2010 under the Belgian EU presidency. With the additional support of the European Commission, the two-day conference brought together high-level policymakers and decision makers in the field to discuss the future of working conditions across Europe.
