COMPANY HOUSING
DIENSTWOHNUNG

Form of accommodation or dwelling provided by the employer to the employee free of charge or for a small rent which is significantly lower than the local rate. The other significant feature of company housing is that on the employee's side the right of use is “tied” to the duration of the employment relationship. The provision of company housing may be regulated by an optional works agreement. The value of the employee's right of use (usufruct) over such housing is classed as payment in kind. (The term Werkswohnung is used synonymously: note the difference in spelling from Werkwohnung, the usage in Germany.)
