AUSTRIA
COMPULSORY MILITARY SERVICE
PRÄSENZDIENST

Every male Austrian citizen who is pronounced fit by the medical authorities is obliged to complete military service (also referred to as Wehrdienst) unless he opts, within the prescribed time limit, to perform community service (Zivildienst) as an alternative. Basic military service lasts for six months, plus a further two months (60 days) of military exercises which must be completed in blocks of 5-10 days at two-year intervals. If the individual concerned so prefers, in most engagements the entire eight-month service liability may be completed in one continuous spell.
