AUSTRIA
COMPULSORY SOCIAL INSURANCE
SOZIALVERSICHERUNGSPFLICHT

In Austria, social insurance covering health, industrial injuries and pensions insurance (plus, for employees, unemployment insurance) is obligatory for all economically active persons, above specified earnings thresholds. In the case of employees, the threshold is the earnings level below which they are classed as minimally employed workers. However, since 1998 minimally employed workers have also had the right (except for unemployment insurance) to opt into the state scheme by voluntary declaration.
