Very extensive government department whose range of responsibilities involves administering the largest proportion of public funds. The Ministry is divided into eight sections: Section I is responsible for organizing the department's administration; Section II for supervision of the social insurance institutions (pensions, health and accident insurance); Section III for employment policy and supervision of the Employment Service, and hence also unemployment insurance; Section IV for policy on the disabled, care provision and welfare benefits (Bundessozialämter, i.e. Federal Welfare Agencies); Section V for labour law and general social policy; Section VI for organizing the Labour Inspectorates (Arbeitsinspektorate); and Sections VII and VIII for the health system and health care. (The Ministry is widely referred to by the initials BMAGS.)
