Sustainable employability can be characterised as the capability of employees to participate in a healthy, vital and productive way in paid work until they are eligible for a pension. The productivity and sustainable employability of the Dutch workforce is vital for the economy, now and in the future. Its enhancement is a priority for government policy.

With increasing use of innovative information and communication technology (ICT) in the workplace and associated changes in business processes, use of social media (the newest ICT trend) can be one way of providing workers with immediate communication and information, and supporting innovative work behaviour. However, there are concerns that use of social media may increase emotional exhaustion due to information overload. Conversely, the introduction and use of company-wide (ICT) such as workflow or enterprise resource planning (ERP) software since the 1990s has standardised company practices, leaving little room for innovative behaviour and encouraging passive behaviour.

The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions has commissioned a research project to analyse the impact of flexible employment policies and human resources management on working conditions at the corporate level. Research institutes of seven countries participate in this project. For each country two or three cases are studied of organisations applying different flexible employment solutions. The seven countries are: Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom.

Nowadays, technology plays a central role in workplaces, enabling the speedy production of goods and services and facilitating communication and innovation processes. This report examines the different categories of technology used in workplaces in order to gauge their influence on working conditions and health outcomes. The analysis is based on findings from the Fourth Working Conditions Survey carried out across 31 countries, including the 27 EU Member States. The findings reveal that it is not so much the technology itself but rather the associated working conditions that put workers’ health and safety at risk.
