Ageing workforce

The retention of older workers in employment is an important objective not only of labour market policies but also for social protection budgets. The Foundation has gathered and analysed cases of good practice in age management, designed to improve job opportunities and working conditions for older workers. Each case study describes how the organisation approached the issue and what the results were in the medium to long term.

  Organisational background   Pikolin, a family enterprise, is Spain’s market leader in the production and marketing of sleep products, such as mattresses and bed-frames, maintaining a 35% dominant share of the market. Based in Zaragoza, capital of the Aragon province in north-east Spain, it represents an important company for the region. The Zaragoza plant, measuring 180,000 square metres, is the largest warehouse in Europe for this type of production. In 2005, its annual turnover reached €183 million.

It manufactures objects from blown and pressed glass, such as light bulbs, screens, lampshades, underwater equipment, operating theatre equipment and home decoration products. Based in Mataró, an industrial city near Barcelona, the company currently exports to France, Germany, Italy, Russia and the Scandinavian countries.
