This report explores the opportunities open to employees in workplaces across Europe to participate in decision-making, either in the context of their job or in relation to wider organisational issues affecting their work. Employee involvement is a key component of work organisation, relating to other dimensions such as physical working conditions and work intensity. Two dimensions of employee involvement are covered: task discretion – or the influence that employees can exercise over their immediate work tasks – and organisational participation – or the influence that employees have over work organisation. While in the EU27 as a whole there are limited opportunities for employees to participate in decision-making, the findings point to the clear benefits for employees in working in organisations that give greater scope for their involvement. Crucially, employee involvement has been shown to have a positive effect on employee motivation and psychological wellbeing, critical elements in fostering enhanced work performance and company productivity.

    En el presente informe se consideran las oportunidades de los trabajadores en los lugares de labor de toda Europa para participar en la toma de decisiones, ya sea en el contexto de su puesto de trabajo concreto, o en relación con cuestiones organizativas de mayor alcance que afectan a su trabajo. La participación de los trabajadores constituye un componente esencial de la organización del trabajo, y en el informe se abordan dos dimensiones: la capacidad discrecional de los trabajadores (la influencia que pueden ejercer estos en sus tareas profesionales inmediatas), y la participación en la organización (la influencia que ejercen los trabajadores sobre la organización del trabajo). Aunque las oportunidades de participación de los trabajadores de la UE27 en la toma de decisiones son bastante limitadas, las conclusiones indican la existencia de ventajas inequívocas, sobre todo en lo que se refiere a la motivación y el bienestar psicológico de las plantillas, elementos primordiales para promover la mejora del rendimiento laboral y la productividad empresarial.
