Examining quality of life in 28 European countries, the report provides an analysis of the views and experiences of the citizens of the new Europe on aspects relating to low income, such as economic strain, income deprivation and multiple disadvantage.

Examining quality of life in 28 European countries, including the acceding and candidate countries as well as the current Member States of the EU, this report provides, for the first time, an analysis of views and experiences of the citizens of the new Europe regarding the risk to social integration arising from marginalisation, deprivation and poverty. The analysis is based on data from the European Commission’s Eurobarometer survey carried out in the acceding and candidate countries in Spring 2002 and standard EU 15 Eurobarometers.

With ten new Member States joining the European Union in May 2004 and other applications in waiting, Europe’s social portrait changes profoundly. Several myths and prejudices prevail. This new report shatters some of these and provides a snapshot of the widely varying situation regarding quality of life issues in the enlarged Europe.

This research report from the European Foundation for the Improvement and Living Conditions draws on the results of Eurobarometer surveys carried out in the EU and the 13 acceding and candidate countries. The objective of the research was to contribute to the policy debate on migration in the EU by presenting new empirical evidence on the potential extent and structure of migration from the acceding and candidate countries towards the existing EU Member States. In this way, it is presented as a contribution to the discussion about possible future migration trends in an enlarging EU.

This information sheet offers a brief overview of the Foundation's new research project in the living conditions sphere. The Foundation launched a new pan-European ‘quality of life’ survey in May 2003. This project will provide new information and analysis on living conditions and quality of life issues throughout the 28 countries of the EU and its candidate countries. The first results, to be presented at the end of 2003, will draw on the survey’s findings, together with existing information from a database of comparable EU-wide data. Analysis and reporting is being supported by a network of experts in the candidate countries. A concept report proposing a framework for the research is available (EF02108). Information sheets set out a brief overview of each project, forming a useful introduction point. They answer key questions as to: What is the project about? Why is the research being carried out?
