Eurofound publishes its work in a range of publication formats to match audience needs and the nature of the output. These include flagship reports on a particular area of activity, research reports summarising the findings of a research project and policy briefs presenting policy pointers from research projects or facts and figures relevant to policy debates. Also included are blog articles, regular articles on working life in Europe, presentations, working papers providing background material to ongoing or already concluded research, and reports arising from ad hoc requests by policymakers. Other corporate publications include annual reports, brochures and promotional publications.   • Doctors end strike alert in protracted hospital crisis

    Slovakian doctors have begun handing in their notice as part of a protest by hospital physicians, organised by the Trade Union of Physicians (LOZ), which continues (*SK1105029I* [1]) in most state-owned hospitals.   • AXA signs European framework agreement on structural change

    The French insurance group AXA [1], which has 132,429 employees worldwide, including 78,800 in Europe, concluded the two agreements with negotiators from AXA’s European Works Council (Comité Européen de groupe AXA [2]) and the European Union industry federation UNI Finance [3]. The group-level framework agreement includes a set of nine principles, originally adopted in 2004, to guide the European subsidiaries of the AXA group in managing the process of organisational change.   • Protests mount over Polish ‘junk’ job contracts

    At the end of 2010, Poland had the highest proportion of workers in the European Union employed on fixed-term contracts. Statistics from Eurostat [1] show 27.7% of the country’s total number of employees have these contracts, while the EU27 average is 14%.Civil law contracts, which are not governed by labour law, are also commonly used, especially for young people, with a report (in Polish, 1.4Mb PDF [2]) by the National Labour Inspectorate indicating that in 2010, 20.9% of workers signed civil law contracts.   • Social partners sign ‘historic’ tripartite framework agreement

    A tripartite framework of a new centralised national agreement on wages and conditions was worked out between social partners in Finland in October 2011. The agreement lasts for 25 months, offering a pay increase of 4.3 % over the period. Furthermore, a lump sum payment of €150 at the beginning of 2012 is also included.

  • Annual work programme 2012

    The year 2012 marks the last year of Eurofound’s four-year 2009–2012 work programme Europe at work: Better life and opportunities for all. The drivers of change listed in the four-year-programme – globalisation, technological change, climate change and the demographic challenge – remain, but due to the financial and economic crisis, emphasis has shifted, and the impact of the crisis as well as the issues of stimulating growth and job creation have gained prominence. While continuing to focus on the completion of work under the current 4 year programme, the discussion on the priorities for the next four years will be a key part of Eurofound’s strategic work during 2012.
  • ETUC marks 50 years of the European Social Charter

    The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC [1]) marked the 50th anniversary of the European Social Charter (ESC [2]) by adopting a resolution (388Kb PDF) [3] at its executive committee on 19–20 October 2011. It tells how the ESC has, since its adoption on 18 October 1961 by the Council of Europe [4], contributed to the improvement of people’s working and living conditions. It says that the charter is ‘one of the last safeguards to protect workers and citizens, in particular the most vulnerable’.   • Government agrees minimum wage rise for 2012

    The minimum wage rate in Slovakia has increased almost four times in nominal terms from €81.3 per month in 1993 to €317 in 2011. As Table 1 indicates, the rate has also increased each year since 2002 in nominal as well as real terms.
  • Employers join mass turnout at national strike
