Deliveroo breaks the front: accident insurance coverage for all riders (Deliveroo rompe il fronte: copertura assicurativa per tutti i rider)
The development of recent years has led us to believe that behind the gig economy there is a hell of precariousness and no protection for workers. Too often, the news on the new platforms of so-called on-demand work are about abuse and exploitation, unrecognized workers’ rights and long-standing union achievements trampled in a single click. Yet, if the gig economy or ‘economy of the little jobs’ - as many call it - is bound to consolidate, to become part and parcel of the labour market and not just a fall-back option for those who want to make ends meet, it is reasonable to expect an age of maturity. A new phase in which established regulatory frameworks are adjusted to the requirements of the digital world, without remaining halfway on the path to innovation. London-based food delivery company Deliveroo is going in this direction. It has a turnover in the billions of euros (one billion euros in revenues from June 2016 to June 2017) and agreements with over 35 thousand restaurants worldwide, of which 1,900 in Italy. Today, with an agreement that covers all twelve countries in which it operates, the company launches a single free insurance coverage for all of its 35 thousand riders, including about 1,300 ‘Italians’.
