Representation in crowdwork and gigwork: Initiatives for regulating platform work in Germany (Interessenvertretung bei Crowd- und Gigwork - Initiativen zur Regulierung von Plattformarbeit in Deutschland)

The key findings of this paper:
- The platform economy breaks with traditional organizational forms of work and goes hand in hand with atypical forms of employment - crowdwork and gigwork;
- Platforms make it difficult to set up collective representation structures because they lack the operational structures and thus the co-presence and direct communication between employees;
- Nonetheless, there are initiatives by employees and unions to establish lobbying structures in the platform economy;
- Platforms prove to be difficult to develop representation because of the resistance of companies, but also because of the accessibility of employees. Trade unions must therefore weigh the costs and benefits of their initiatives;
- Gigwork and the local bondage of services favor bottom-up initiatives of employees
