Ageing workforce

The retention of older workers in employment is an important objective not only of labour market policies but also for social protection budgets. The Foundation has gathered and analysed cases of good practice in age management, designed to improve job opportunities and working conditions for older workers. Each case study describes how the organisation approached the issue and what the results were in the medium to long term.

  Organisational background   Founded in 1965, OKG PLC is a nuclear power company situated on Sweden’s east coast. Solely devoted to electricity production, the company is owned by two large electricity groups and its plant’s three nuclear reactors produce 10% of Sweden’s electricity. The company is organised into 10 units; 850 of the 1,100 workers at the nuclear power plant are OKG employees. The figure below shows the age distribution of the workforce.   Organisational background   Kronoberg County Council’s most important responsibility relates to health care, and around 85% of its activity is devoted to medical and health services. Currently, the council operates 24 medical centres, public dental services in 15 district clinics, and three hospitals, one of them specialising in psychiatric care. The council also supports cultural activities, public transport etc. It is an organisational unit of the county of Kronoberg and is politically governed.
