Nachhaltigkeitsagenda für Getränkeverpackungen
Sustainability agenda for beverage packaging
The programme is directed to companies that are active in the following sectors: beverage bottlers, wholesalers, retailers, importers and other distributors, packaging manufacturers and the collection and recycling systems for beverage packaging open. Food companies are free to join the measures related to the voluntary food waste avoidance agreement.
Companies that are willing to accept significant parts of this sustainability agenda declare their individual membership. This declaration should be sent to the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. The explanation relates to the sustainability agenda as a whole or to the type of company concerned activities.
Companies that have joined the 2007-2017 Sustainability Agenda are informed of their continuation and do not need to apply again.
The Austrian beverage industry and its social partners introduced a catalogue of measures to ensure sustainability in the production and sale of beverage packages. The measure aims to prevent waste, motivate usage of reusable items, reduce costs and save energy in the production of beverage packages.
The programme establishes a supportive working group 'working group sustainability agenda for beverage packaging' whose responsibility will be the coordination, monitoring and financing of sustainability agenda fulfilment. The working group will also offer workshops and training programmes focusing on the areas of energy management, resource conservation and relevant measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The team may take part in projects that aim to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, the working group provides cross-company measures to inform consumers about CO2 reduction options and the sustainable design of beverage packaging.
The sustainability agenda annually raises at least €75,000 and it is led by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.
The project is accompanied by a stakeholder advisory council including the social partners and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water management. The council is responsible for acceptance of goals, measures and procedures. The stakeholder advisory board is to be held annually by the working group to exchange information on the current status of developments with the stakeholders.
The agenda is in force until 31 December 2030.
