Systemisation and analysis of crowd sourcing providers and crowd work projects (Systematisierung und Analyse von Crowd-Sourcing-Anbietern und Crowd-Work-Projekten)

With the term crowd sourcing, Jeff Howe in 2006 described the then new trend of outsourcing previously internally completed tasks over the internet to an unlimited amount of potential contributors (the ’crowd’). To do this, companies today use a growing market of external crowd sourcing platforms. The present study provides a systematic overview, identifying five distinct basic forms: (1) Micro-task platforms, (2) Marketplace platforms, (3) Design platforms, (4) Testing platforms, and (5) Innovation platforms. These basic forms differ in the control and monitoring mechanisms as well as the incentive structures and forms of remuneration with which they organise work in the crowd.
