This report presents results from the Employment Options Survey with a special focus on the relationship between private living circumstances and labour market participation. Gender, age, marital status and children do have an influence on employment rates as well as on working conditions. The analyses in this report concentrate on the working time aspect and on the place of work. The question of how to share paid work and domestic duties among both partners within a family is relevant for more than two thirds of the working population in Europe.
During the summer of 1998 more than 30,000 persons aged between 16 to 64 years from 16 European countries were interviewed about their current employment status, their working conditions and their preferences. This leaflet summarises the main findings of the survey on the subject of current participation in paid work and future preferences of men and women who are living together as a couple.
