In a session based on Eurofound’s project on the Future of Manufacturing in Europe and related research on the task content of jobs, the panel will explore how technological progress and other drivers of change are transforming the nature of work throughout the economy. Speakers will respond to questions on the impact of digital developments on employment, whether technological progress means robots are becoming smarter than humans or is it that tasks in work are changing and new skills are required to perform them. The participants will also look at how shaping these developments can promote economic growth and improve working conditions.
Shaping the future for platform workers in the EU: Opportunities and challenges
Platform work – the online matching of supply and demand for paid work – remains small-scale in Europe but is evolving rapidly. While challenging established institutions and structures, this employment form provides opportunities for the labour market, economy and society. Based on recent Eurofound research which identifies specific types of platform work, a panel of government and social partner representatives will discuss the potential positive and negative implications of platform work and ideas on how to deal with this new form of work.

Juan Menéndez-Valdés is, since 2010, Director of Eurofound, the EU Agency providing knowledge to assist in the development of social, employment and work-related policies. He is responsible for the development of Eurofound´s strategy and work programmes and leads a team of more than 100 staff members in their implementation. From 2015 to 2016, he was chair of the Network of EU decentralised Agencies. |

Barbara Gerstenberger is Head of the Working Life Unit at Eurofound, which researches working conditions, industrial relations and developments in working life. She joined Eurofound in September 2001 as a research manager in the European Monitoring Centre on Change and she previously worked as senior research officer in the European Metalworkers' Federation in Brussels. |

Donald Storrie is Chief Researcher/Coordinator in the Eurofound Directorate and project leader for the pilot project on the Future of Manufacturing in Europe. He has coordination responsibility for research at Eurofound, including survey development and ad hoc requests. He was previously Director of the Centre of European Labour Market Studies (Sweden). |

Martina Bisello is a Research Officer in the Employment unit at Eurofound. Her research interests include structural changes in the labour market, the effects of technological change on the economy, and gender gaps. Currently, she is also involved in the analysis of socio-economic convergence among the Member States and regions of the European Union. |

Irene Mandl is Head of the Employment Unit at Eurofound. She is mainly involved in research on labour market developments (including new forms of work and employment, digitalisation, restructuring and related public policy approaches) and topics at the intersection of employment and entrepreneurship (such as job-creation, workplace practices, small and medium-sized enterprises, business start-ups and scale-ups and internationalisation). |

Rhona Murphy is Head of Employment Law Services at Ibec, Ireland’s largest employer organisation, which she joined in 2005 as part of the Legal and Equality Unit. After qualifying as a solicitor in 1999, she worked in private practice for a number of years, representing employers, employees and trade unions. |

Louis-Charles Viossat is Inspector General of Social Affairs at the Ministries of Labour and of Health and Social Affairs in France. He is the author of recent policy and evaluation reports on collaborative platforms, on social security for the self-employed and on labour in the public radio and television sectors. Currently, he is drafting a government report on regulation of the taxi and private hire vehicle sector. |

Ger Gibbons has worked as Social Policy and Legislative Officer with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) since February 2018. He previously worked in the research unit of the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU), as an adviser to Members of the European Parliament, with EU public affairs consultancies and in the European Commission. |
