    2008 marked the completion of Eurofound’s four-year programme, Changing Europe: Better work, better life. Eurofound built on its work of previous years in providing comparative information, research and analysis on living and working conditions, industrial relations and the management of change for key actors in the field of EU social policy. As outlined in the 2005–2008 programme, Eurofound’s work is divided into three key tasks: monitoring and understanding change, researching and exploring what works, and communicating and sharing ideas and experience. Within these three tasks, its activities fall into four thematic areas: employment, industrial relations and partnership, work–life balance and social cohesion.

    2005 was het eerste jaar waarin het nieuwe vierjarenprogramma 2005–2008 werd uitgevoerd. De Stichting ging energiek en ambitieus aan het werk met haar nieuwe programma, „Beter leven en werken in een veranderend Europa”. Zij zette een reeks onderzoeksprojecten op voor de vier prioritaire thema’s: meer en betere werkgelegenheid, evenwicht tussen werk en privé-leven, participatie/partnerschap en sociale cohesie. Aan het eind van het jaar vond er een bijzondere gebeurtenis plaats, namelijk de benoeming van de nieuwe directeur van de Stichting, Jorma Karppinen, die in december met zijn taken is begonnen.

    Bij de voorbereidingen op een nieuwe uitbreiding van de Europese Unie met Bulgarije en Roemenië in 2006 werd de druk van de globalisering en demografische veranderingen steeds meer voelbaar. Beleidsmakers op Europees en nationaal niveau werden voor belangrijke vragen gesteld op het gebied van migratie, werkgelegenheid, onderwijs, gelijke kansen en sociaal beleid. Over al deze en andere onderwerpen heeft de Stichting in 2006 actuele praktische kennis en informatie verstrekt.

For its analysis, it draws on data from the European Restructuring Monitor (ERM), the only EU-wide monitoring instrument available. The 2007 ERM report identifies some of the recent and emerging trends in the current phase of globalisation and provides suggestions on how policy should be re-oriented to address these new circumstances.
