The Edinburgh Workers’ Observatory
The Edinburgh Workers’ Observatory is a worker-led collaboration of platform workers and researchers. It is supported by the Scottish Trades’ Union Congress (STUC) and the University of Edinburgh. It involves members of STUC-affiliated unions as well as the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).
The oberservatory aims to monitor new forms of work in Edinburgh, develop tools and tactics to better utilise them, collectively challenge conditions in self-employed and platform work, and take control of their labour. The priorities and projects of the Workers’ Observatory are led by workers, with a long-term vision of developing workers’ skills for inquiry, data analysis, and organisation. It will allow workers to conduct inquiries into ways that wages, time, and conditions are determined in digital work, to develop the equipment and resources to investigate working conditions in the platform economy, and to explore the effects of platform work on policy, platform-development, and pandemics.
