The Challans slaughterhouse (Covia group), which employs 140 people, was placed in liquidation by the Commercial Court of Poitiers for lack of a buyer. The court ordered the liquidation of the four Covia companies: Sovia (transport), Covia meat sectors (processing), SEAC (slaughter) and Scop Cooperative Meat (livestock farmers), resulting in the loss of 140 jobs, said Serge Rondeau, Mayor of Challans. Hundreds of nearby farmers will also be affected by the closure.
The trade union CFDT commented that the company had run up into quite high denbt and that the plant would have needed to be renewed earlier to adapt to changed regulations.
