Description

Steel multinational ArcelorMittal has announced that the group has plans for 1,400 voluntary departures in France by the start of 2009.

The plan will affect only administrative and sales jobs and is part of a larger programme aimed at cutting 9,000 worldwide, including 6,000 in Europe, the manager explained.

In France, the group has some 6,000 staff employed in non-production activities. The group, which has a total workforce of about 28,000 in France, recently unveiled its global aim to secure one billion euros in cost cuts as the steel industry is hard hit by the economic slowdown.

Meanwhile, the steel maker has insisted on elaborating a common assistance programme for the employees to be affected by the job-cutting measure.

The trade unions said the job cuts are affecting 25 per cent of the group's employees in France, compared with just 20 per cent on average in other European countries.
