It has been announced that Kerry Foods is due to close its production facility in Burton on Trent, which will result in the loss of 900 jobs. The site which manufactures ready meals previously held a contract to supply supermarket chain Tesco, which accounted for at least 75% of the work undertaken at the site. This contract ended in June 2019 and therefore the news to close was not unexpected. The plant is due to close in September 2019.
A spokesperson for the Unite union and the local member of parliament expressed sadness at the news of the closure. Unite also commented that they had been in contact with the brewer Molson Coors, the second largest employer in the town to explore opportunities for employment.
