Yamaha has announced that it will close its plant in Barcelona in 2011 and relocate its production activities to France. The closure which will take effect from June, will result in the loss of all 430 jobs. The company stated that efforts will be made to relocate as many workers as possible - possibly 100 workers will be transferred to the French plant, and the rest of workers, depending on the outcomes of the negotiations, may be relocated to other sites in Catalonia.
UPDATE - 19/04/2011: Yamaha is reconsidering its decision of closing the plant in Catalonia. After negotiations with the unions and the labour authority of Catalonia, Yamaha has opened the possibility of reducing the layoffs to 140, thus maintaining the production of the model X-Max at the Spanish plant. Nevertheless, negotiations are still ongoing.
