In July 2005 the social partners in the brewery industry signed a Charter on ethical standards of the social partners aiming at encouraging constructive social dialogue and jointly promoting the core ILO conventions, EU directives and national legislation on workers’ labour rights. The Charter is seen as a follow up to successful concluding of the branch collective agreement at the end of 2004 and as an important step towards the introduction of corporate social responsibility in this sector.

A national tripartite workshop on the ILO's 2003 Guidelines on social dialogue in public emergency services in a changing environment was held in Bulgaria in April 2005. The article presents the main findings of a survey of employment conditions and workers' rights in public emergency services presented at the event, the discussions at the workshop, and the recommendations of the social partners.

In February 2005, trade unions and employers in Bulgarian healthcare, along with the government, held a national workshop on workplace violence in the sector, as part of the follow-up to an international programme on the issue. Participants discussed the implementation of activities under a 2003-5 action plan and the findings of a survey, and a further action plan was adopted for 2005-7. A significant recent development has been inclusion of the issue of workplace violence in the health sector collective agreement for 2004.

A study of industrial relations and personnel management practices in 29 subsidiaries of 18 multinational companies operating in Bulgaria is due to be published in mid-2004. It draws a contradictory picture: while highlighting examples of good practice, the research finds that the management of some of the subsidiaries is trying to marginalise trade unions and belittle the role of social dialogue.

At a conference held in October 2003, the Bulgarian social partners discussed the growing problem of workplace violence in the health sector, based on the findings of an international research project. Participants at the event agreed to launch a follow-up action plan for the prevention and elimination of workplace violence in this sector.

On 11 June 2003, a tripartite meeting was held on the initiative of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB ) to discuss the issue of unpaid wages. The meeting brought together representatives of the government, employers’ organisations and CITUB and its member branch federations, along with trade union officials from some of the companies involved.  http://www.knsb-bg.org/
