Abstract

It is increasingly common for workers in the EU to take up paid work after retirement. This trend adds an important dimension to the current discourse on extending working lives. Facilitating work after retirement for those who want to work can contribute to sustainable pension systems. This study investigates retirees’ motivations for seeking paid work and their opportunities for gaining employment. It examines the extent to which work after retirement is related to income adequacy among the retired population. It also explores the types of paid employment that retirees take up and identifies ways in which companies seek to recruit and retain retirees. The report concludes with recommendations for governments, employers and retirees.

    É cada vez mais comum os trabalhadores da UE exercerem uma atividade remunerada depois da reforma. Esta tendência acrescenta uma dimensão importante ao atual debate sobre o prolongamento da vida ativa. Facilitar o trabalho pós reforma a quem deseje continuar a trabalhar pode contribuir para a sustentabilidade dos sistemas de pensões. O presente estudo analisa as motivações dos reformados para procurarem trabalho remunerado e as suas oportunidades de obter emprego. Examina em que medida o trabalho pós reforma se relaciona com a adequação dos rendimentos entre a população reformada, bem como os tipos de trabalho remunerado realizado pelos reformados, identificando as formas como as empresas procuram recrutar e manter estes últimos. O relatório conclui com recomendações dirigidas aos governos, aos empregadores e aos reformados.
