Eurofound publishes its work in a range of publication formats to match audience needs and the nature of the output. These include flagship reports on a particular area of activity, research reports summarising the findings of a research project and policy briefs presenting policy pointers from research projects or facts and figures relevant to policy debates. Also included are blog articles, regular articles on working life in Europe, presentations, working papers providing background material to ongoing or already concluded research, and reports arising from ad hoc requests by policymakers. Other corporate publications include annual reports, brochures and promotional publications.   • Unions call for new draft of proposed public teachers statute

    In late May 2006, the Ministry of Education and Culture (Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia, MEC [1]) presented a preliminary draft of the Statute of Non-University Public Teaching Staff, expecting that it would be ratified within a few days. However, all of the trade unions participating in the National Sectoral Commission expressed their disapproval of the MEC’s haste in concluding the bargaining process, and called for a postponement in order to give time to discuss the proposals with teachers.   • Protest at planned downsizing of Pirelli plant

    In 2005, the Pirelli [1] group had around 27,000 employees, 3,102 of whom were on fixed-term contracts. The employees are spread across 24 plants located in 12 countries around the world, namely in Italy and Brazil (five plants each), in the UK, Germany, Turkey and Romania (two plants each), and in Argentina, China, Egypt, Spain, the US and Venezuela (one plant each). Pirelli’s core business is tyre production, a sector in which it has a 6% share of the global market; moreover, the company is the fifth largest worldwide operator in terms of sales volume.   • Employer organisation launches risk assessment service

    The Lithuanian Business Employers’ Confederation (Lietuvos verslo darbdaviu konfederacija, LVDK [1]), an organisation representing small businesses in Lithuania, is in the process of establishing a professional risk assessment [2] institution, which will allow small enterprises to be evaluated and to receive a consultation on health-related risks in the workplace. This follows the organisation’s securing of financial support from the State Social Insurance Fund Board (Valstybinio socialinio draudimo fondo valdyba, Sodra [3]) for the prevention of accidents at work and occupational diseases.   • New Ferrero agreement promotes work–life balance

    A proposal of renewal of the company collective agreement was signed on 26 July 2006 by the international chocolate and confectionery manufacturer Ferrero [1] and the food sector trade unions affiliated to the three main trade union confederations, namely: the Italian Federation of Agroindustrial Workers (Federazione Lavoratori Agro Industria, Flai-Cgil [2]), the Agroindustrial, Food and Environment Federation (Federazione Agricola Alimentare Ambientale Industriale, Fai-Cisl [3]) and the Italian Union of Agroindustrial Workers (Unione Italiana Lavoratori Agroalimentari, Uila-Uil [4]).   • European Court rulings on working time reinforce right to annual leave and breaks

    Council Directive 93/104/EC [1] concerning certain aspects of the organisation of working time [2] lays down minimum provisions regarding working hours, annual leave [3], and rest breaks during and between work shifts. The directive was adopted as a measure to ensure the health and safety [4] of EU workers and is based on a general principle of adapting work to the worker. Three cases in particular, heard by the European Court of Justice [5] in 2006, have established important ground rules for ensuring that health and safety procedures, as enshrined in the directive, are not bypassed, whether by formal agreement between the contracting parties or otherwise.   • Differences between sectors in collectively agreed Christmas bonuses

    On 30 October 2006, an overview of collective agreements in 23 sectors was published by the Collective Agreement Archive (Tarifarchiv) of the Institute of Economic and Social Research (Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftliches Institut, WSI [1]) within the Hans Böckler Foundation (Hans-Böckler-Stiftung, HBS [2]). Among its findings, the overview reveals that the so-called ‘Christmas bonus’ – an annual bonus paid to employees towards the end of the year – varies widely between sectors (see Table).   • Trade union congress calls for greater solidarity

    In early October 2006, the Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (Confédération des Syndicats Chrétiens/Algemeen Christelijk Vakverbond, CSC [1]/ACV [2]) published its annual statistics. CSC/ACV brings together more than 1.6 million affiliate members and plays an important role in the Belgian social dialogue system. The confederation’s annual statistics publication was used as a working paper in preparation for CSC/ACV’s thirty-third statutory congress, held on 19–21 October 2006 in the northwest port city of Ostend, bringing together over 1,000 people.
