EWCS 2015: Research reports
05 November 2018
Survey

Eurofound’s European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) paints a wide-ranging picture of Europe at work across countries, occupations, sectors and age groups. Its findings highlight actions for policy actors to help them address the challenges facing Europe today. In 2015, Eurofound carried out its sixth survey in the series (in operation since 1991). This sixth survey interviewed nearly 44,000 workers in 35 countries. Its findings provide detailed information on a broad range of issues, including exposure to physical and psychosocial risks, work organisation, work–life balance, and health and well-being.

Following the publication of the Sixth European Working Conditions Survey – Overview report in November 2016, a number of reports on specific themes and drawing on the EWCS data were commissionned and published in 2017 and 2018.

European Company Survey 2019
28 February 2018
Survey

To achieve sustainable, inclusive and smart growth, Europe needs competitive companies that offer decent jobs to workers. To perform at their best, companies need motivated workers with the right skills to do their job, and willing to use those skills to the best of their ability. To have sustainable, productive and fulfilling careers, workers need a stimulating work environment that recognises their input and facilitates their development.

European Quality of Life Survey 2016
23 January 2018
Survey

Eurofound’s European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) documents living conditions and people’s social situation, and explores issues pertinent to the lives of European citizens. From September 2016 to March 2017, Eurofound carried out its fourth survey in the series (in operation since 2003). The EQLS 2016 interviewed nearly 37,000 people in 33 countries – the 28 EU Member States and 5 candidate countries (Albania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey). Its findings provide detailed information on a broad range of issues in three main areas:

EQLS 2016 - Questionnaire

Survey

A high-quality questionnaire is a key element of a successful survey. Therefore, Eurofound invests heavily in the development and translation of its questionnaires.

Content

A total of 104 questions and 262 items are available in the EQLS 2016. The questionnaire from the previous survey was reviewed in consultation with both policy stakeholders and experts in survey research. Some 66% of the EQLS 2011 questionnaire was kept as trend questions, while 51% of the EQLS 2016 questionnaire is comparable with earlier rounds.

Sector sheets
22 December 2016
Survey

The sectoral information sheets listed below give an overview of the structural characteristics, work organisation practices, human resource management, employee participation and social dialogue in nine selected sectors of economic activity, both private (NACE B–N, R, S) and public (O, P, Q). These sectors are (for the private sector): industry; construction; commerce and hospitality; transport; financial services; and business, administration and other services; and (for the public sector): public administration and defence – compulsory social security; education; and public health. In each information sheet, aspects of establishment characteristics in the sector are compared with the EU28 as a whole. The information is based on the Third European Company Survey (ECS) which gathers data about companies and establishments with 10 or more employees across 34 countries.

EWCS 2015 – Coding
07 November 2016
Survey

The sixth EWCS includes a limited number of open questions to record respondent’s occupation and the sector of economic activity of the organisation they work for.

  • Occupations were coded at the 4-digit level according to the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) for occupations ISCO 08 and ISCO 88.
  • Sectors were coded at the 3-digit according to the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community – NACE rev 1.1 and NACE 2.0.

Coding in both versions of the occupations and activity nomenclature facilitates comparisons with previous surveys in the EWCS series.

Information on the level of education or training attained by the respondent is also available in the EWCS. Country-specific questions regarding education allowed for automatic coding in order to obtain the internationally comparable categories in the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) at 1- digit level.
