Considerable variation exists between countries: the rate is above 55% in Denmark, Sweden and Finland but below 20% in countries such as Turkey, Greece and Portugal. Substantial variations also exist depending on industry sector and workplace size. Many of these characteristics are related to the presence or absence of a trade union or works council. Workplace representation is more prevalent in countries where national or sectoral bargaining dominates. It is also higher in countries with more extensive levels of legislative support for workplace representation.

    Ako funguje sociálny dialóg v praxi, aké formy zastúpenia existujú a ako fungujú? Prieskum európskych podnikov (ECS) 2009 nadácie Eurofound poskytuje veľké množstvo údajov z 30 krajín na preskúmanie týchto otázok. V tejto správe sa využili údaje z prieskumu ECS a ďalšie zdroje údajov a sledujú sa faktory, ktoré majú vplyv na spôsob sociálneho dialógu, ktorý prebieha v spoločnosti, najmä pokiaľ ide o zamestnanecké rady a odborové zväzy, veľkosť podniku, vek podniku, povahu výrobkov alebo poskytovaných služieb, voľbu zamestnávateľov a zloženie pracovnej sily; toto všetko sú dôležité faktory. Vplyv má aj širší rámec, napríklad v akom rozsahu vláda zasahuje do sociálneho dialógu a na akej úrovni prebiehajú rokovania.
