This report reviews the main results from the first Portuguese survey on
working conditions. It outlines the overall profile of workers and the
workplace in Portugal, and covers topics such as working time, job mobility,
occupational risk factors, and health and safety in the workplace. Among
other perspectives, the report highlights gender differences revealed in the
The survey was compiled as part of a study, Older workers: Public policies
and company practices (2.72Mb PDF; in Portuguese)  (Trabalhadores mais
velhos: políticas públicas e práticas empresariais), and published in 2003
by the Ministry for Social Security and Labour  (Ministério da Segurança
Social e do Trabalho). It aims to contribute to the debate on active ageing
which is currently taking place in Portugal.
A recently published study focused on identifying the main difficulties in
the effective implementation of the principle of equal pay between men and
women, and the extent to which it is implemented. It also proposes
suggestions for good practice.
