The Agenda of the Meeting is attached as Annex 1. Ten experts from nine Member States and a representative of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, a representative of the European Trade Unions plus four experts from the Foundation participated in the Meeting (Annex 2). Dr. Jaume Costa and Mr. Pascal Paoli from the Foundation chaired the Meeting and Professor Jorma Rantanen served as Rapporteur. OPENING AND OBJECTIVES OF THE MEETING 1. Mr. Eric Verborgh, Deputy Director of the Foundation opened the meeting and described briefly Foundation's structure as a generator of new research knowledge and as a body supporting the development of European living and working conditions. Mr. Verborgh stated that the Foundation, in intensifying its rolling planning process for the Programme of Work is making efforts to find new approaches for its research. Such new lines are particularly needed in the present rapidly changing European working life and to give research support for the Commission, for the Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety, Hygiene and Health Protection at Work and the Member States in the implementation of the EU Directives, particularly the Framework Directive 89/391/EEC and its daughter directives. 2. Dr. Jaume Costa, Research Manager of the Foundation introduced the specific objectives of the Meeting. The Foundation has recently carried out and published a comprehensive survey of occupational health strategies in 13 Member States1 2.
