Urban sustainability indicators

Published: 26 August 2012

Urban sustainability indicators are important instruments for assessing the performance of cities. They include environmental, economic and social indicators designed to detect progress in meeting the objectives of sustainability understood in it broadest sense. Many European cities work with specific sets of indicators which enable them to measure their success in attaining their targets and to communicate the results of initiatives undertaken to their citizens. The Foundation created a common framework of urban sustainability indicators for cities based on the Charter of European Sustainable Cities and Towns. This report presents this framework and describes a broad range of indicator measures with a view to developing an index of urban sustainability performance.
