Working conditions in Central America

The First Central American Working Conditions and Health Survey, carried out in 2011, found that many people are self-employed, and that three-quarters of the workforce are not covered by social security. The most common occupational exposure, for men and women in all economic sectors, is repetitive movement. Two-thirds of the workforce feel their health is good or very good, and 7 out of 10 workers report having good mental health. The survey on working conditions was based on a representative sample of 12,024 workers interviewed in their homes in six Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.
