New figures on accidents at work and occupational diseases

According to the recently published /Accident at work avoidance report 1997/ (Unfallverhütungsbericht Arbeit 1997) from the German Federal Government, the number of accidents at work declined further in 1996, while in the same period the number of suspected cases of occupational diseases rose.

According to the recently published Accident at work avoidance report 1997 (Unfallverhütungsbericht Arbeit 1997) from the German Federal Government, the number of accidents at work declined further in 1996, while in the same period the number of suspected cases of occupational diseases rose.

In 1996, there were on average 43 accidents at work per 1,000 employees - the lowest level ever in the Federal Republic - compared with 48 per 1,000 in 1995. The absolute number of notified accidents at work declined by 8.6% to 1,657,556. The number of severe accidents at work remained almost unchanged at 46,341 cases.

In 1996, the accident insurance companies received 93,861 notifications where a patient was suspected of suffering from occupational disease, a 2.5% increase on 1995. The number of registered cases of occupational diseases resulting in death decreased by 3.7% to 2,396.
