In January 2003, Kalevi Hemilä, who was less than a year previously appointed general director of the Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation (Elintarviketeollisuusliitto), was elected as general director of the Confederation of Finnish Industry and Employers (Teollisuuden ja Työnantajain Keskusliitto, TT) as from August 2003. Johannes Koroma, who has been the general director of TT since its foundation in 1992, will step aside and retire at the beginning of 2004. TT has nearly 5,700 member companies, which account for three-quarters of the total export income and value added of Finnish industry. TT [1] member firms employ about 540,000 people.[1] http://www.tt.fi/

Dr Hemilä’s political and international experience is regarded highly in Finland. In 1995-2002, during the two governments led by Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen, he was Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. In his previous positions Dr Hemilä has been regarded as an efficient reorganiser, and he is well known for his negotiating skills. Due to this, some commentators expect that a new era will begins for TT when Dr Hemilä becomes the new general director. The position of general director of TT is very influential. TT is the most important organisation representing export industry and domestic manufacturing in Finland. Its significance is enhanced by the fact that economic and labour market organisations traditionally have a strong position in Finnish society and decision-making.
