According to a European-wide survey, presented on March 20 in Vienna, 8% of Austrian employees suffer from permanent exposure and 37% from repeated exposure to stress. The main causes of stress exposure are time pressure, permanent restructuring, and interactions with difficult clients, patients or students. As a result, service-oriented sectors such as health care, public transport, hotels and restaurants, as well as education (schools), display higher than average scores when it comes to stress exposure. In Austria, the justification for about 40% of invalidity pensions is stress, with its negative consequences for the health of the applicants. The study was commissioned by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and carried out by Ipsos market research.
